Will send more men to border: Martyr's village

SHER NAGAR (MATHURA): Sher Nagar, the village of deceased Lance Naik Hemraj Singh, is unfazed by the events of Tuesday. For the past three decades, it has sent its young men to fight for the country. Currently, there are eight men from the village on duty at the Pakistan and China borders. Hemraj's death has only strengthened their resolve.

"The men are calling us since they heard about Hemraj. They are telling us when we are sending more men to the borders," said Tejinder Singh Jadaon, who himself believes he has a good chance in the armed forces. There are several others who are trying to get into the paramilitary forces.

The villagers though have a tough stand on India's meek response every time such an incident gets reported. This incident, they say, only shows the futility of bilateral talks and cricket series. Rather, they want more people-to-people contact to ease tension. "The politicians are of no use. The people of Pakistan who lead the government have repeatedly back stabbed us whether it was Kargil or the 26/11 massacre. Why we do not just let the people of two countries sort out the problems through non-diplomatic channels?" said Bhagwan Singh, a teacher in the village.

Most youngsters in the village know who all are in the village. More importantly, they know each one's regiment and even the present posting. "Two of the brothers — Shyam Sunder and Ranveer — are at Jammu and Kashmir and Congo respectively. Deen Narayan Singh, a veteran, is in China. We have been sending the men regularly but since 1996 there has been a rush," said Dharamveer Singh, the village sarpanch but does not recall why that year was important. "I guess there were more vacancies," he said.

Tejinder though explains the love for the uniform. "It is the best government job that provides a good and honourable life along with a steady income. The only other government job here is that of a teacher. But then, one of our lads have made it to Delhi police and others might follow," he reasoned.
