Criminal defamation case: Congress leader Digvijaya Singh summoned

NEW DELHI: A trial court on Saturday issued summons against senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh in a criminal defamation case lodged by BJP President Nitin Gadkari after it found "prima facie" evidence to proceed against the politician.

Metropolitan Magistrate Sudesh Kumar directed Singh to appear before the court on December 21 to face trial for the offence punishable under section 499 (defamation) and 500 (punishment for defamation) of the IPC.

Gadkari had filed a defamation case against the Congress general secretary who had allegedly accused him of having business links with his party MP Ajay Sancheti.

In his plea, Gadkari had alleged that Singh accused Gadkari of pocketing huge sum to the tune of Rs 490 crore in the coal block allocation to Sancheti. tnn
